The AWWA is a design standard and not a code. It is used for installation before a public water meter. However, it is also used for any storage tank even if it is installed after a public water meter.
Welded Fire Protection Tank Sizes
Tank sizes vary for obvious reasons. A small residential or commercial property does not need 30,000 gallons of water. The size of the property or commercial business will dictate how big the tank needs to be.
Smaller tanks – 1,000, 2,750, 5,000or 7,500 gallon tanks work well for small farms, small businesses, and residential properties. Small wineries and craft breweries can do well with these smaller tanks for fire protection and drinking water.
Medium tanks – 8,000, 10,000, 12,000 to 15,000 gallons are a good size for small to medium farms and commercial business. The medium welded steel tanks will also work for apartment complexes that have three to four levels.
Larger tanks – 20,000, 25,000 to 30,000 gallon tanks are good for medium to larger farms, businesses, and residential properties. Used for fire protection and drinking water these larger tanks provide the water needed.
These welded steel fire tanks can also be used for drinking water. Drinking water may be necessary for breweries or wineries in the production of their drinks. In this case, it may be wise to have two tanks, one for drinking water and one for fire prevention.
Larger agricultural businesses or commercial businesses that have many acres of land to cover should also consider two or more welded steel fire protection tanks. Having more than one will allow you to cover more ground to prevent fire spreading to your land, crops, livestock, or buildings.
