Fire Protection Tanks in Colorado
In the past decade Colorado like California and other western states has seen a rise in the number of wildfires. Fire protection tanks are now becoming a necessity.
Denver is the capital of Colorado. The climate in Colorado varies due to the variety of the topography. The economy of Colorado is made up of the following:
- Mining
- Agriculture such as cattle, dairy products, marijuana, corn, and more
- Food processing
- Transportation
- Machinery
- Chemical products
- Minerals such as molybdenum
- Tourism
The increase in the number of wildfires has begun to threaten these industries.
In 2018 wildfires burned 430,000 acres, destroyed or damaged 450 homes. The only worse season at that point had been the 2002 season which burned 926,502 acres.
2019 saw Colorado lose 8,959 acres in the Decker fire. In 2020 Colorado had 13 fires. The Cameron Peak Fire burned 208,663 acres. The East Troublesome fire burned 192,560 acres, and the third large acreage fire that year was the Pine Gulch Fire that burned 139,007 acres. The smallest fire in 2019 season was the Lefthand Canyon fire.
In 2021 there was 1,600 acres burned. With the frequency of wildfires every citizen must join local, county, and state officials in wildfire preparedness to reduce the number of acres burned.
What is causing these large scale wildfires? In part, it is happening due to weather cycles. Every few years there will be one or two years that are extremely dry and windy. Then there will be so many years when it is normal, followed by a year or two of very wet weather. Combine the weather cycles with the old growth overshadowing the younger growth choking it, and it becomes dry and easily ignites with a lightning strike or a hot ember on the wind from a campfire.
That is why fire protection tanks are so important. During dry weather patterns they can help provide the water needed to protect your property from fire.

What Is a Fire Protection Tank?
A fire protection tank is a water storage tank that meets all local, county, and state regulations and codes. It is used solely for fire protection and must be clearly labeled as fire protection.
A fire protection tank should be one part of a larger fire preparedness plan. The other parts of that plan need to include the following:
- Remove dry brush and grass from your land
- Keep flammable or combustible material away from structures and trees
- Have a private fire protection tank
- Keep gutters and underneath porches and decks clean of dried leaves
- Use sprinkler systems exterior and interior
- Create a fire break along the property line to help reduce fire from spreading to your property
- Develop an evacuation plan and have practice drills
There are benefits to having a fire protection tank and fire preparedness plan. These are:
- Reduces the risks of total loss off property and life
- May help reduce insurance premiums or keep policy from being canceled.
Fire Tanks for both Commercial and Residential
Both commercial and residential properties in Colorado can benefit from fire tanks.
Commercial properties usually have more structures, equipment, and goods they need to protect so they will want a steel bolted tank with a larger capacity.
Residential properties generally are smaller have few structures and less equipment to protect, so the poly tank will work well for them.
In some cases for small businesses or agricultural areas a combination of both steel bolted and poly tanks are a better solution. The combination works well when you have structures and equipment spread out over your property.

City, County and State Fire Code Requirements for Water Tanks
Whether you are putting a private fire protection tank for commercial or residential property you must follow the codes and regulations that Colorado has put forth.
Colorado state regulations concerning building codes are to help make them safer using the proper water flow for fire suppression systems (sprinklers) and hydrants.
Building codes in Colorado also want the proper materials in the buildings that are fire retardant and slow down the spread of fire.
When it comes to buildings like commercial properties or apartment building Colorado also has fire service codes.
Colorado has also adopted, the NFPA-22 standard so all tanks must be compliant with NFPA-22.

NFPA-22 Compliant Water Tanks
NFPA-22 is a standard for water storage tanks that cover the tank from design, building, installation, upkeep, and accessories.
Accessories are connections and valves that are put on during the making of the tank for the customer.
